The history of the museum
The Türr István Museum is one of the North side of Bács-Bodrog county. This museum collect, process, publish the historical values and show them for the visitors.
The first opportunity was in 1914 to establish the museum in Baja. Déry Frigyes offerd his cultural historical collection and library to his hometown befor the first worldwar. He would like to build the cultural house and he bought ground in the towncenter which was given to Baja. In the building there would be museum and the library.
Because of the firs worldwar his idea was holden over the peace. After the war in 1919 Baja became under the Serbian control. Déry concelled his offertory and he gave the collection to Debrecen.
Between the two worldwar the Türr István Museum opend with a lucky circumstances. Oltványi Imre had an important role in the estublish of the museum. He was an art collector and he made contact with the town. Oltványi collected a great set from the most famous artificers and this set gave the basis of the contemporary hungarian gallery (From the Gresham-circle: Barcsay Jenő, Czóbel Béla, Egry József, Ferenczy Noémi, Kádár Béla, Kmetty János, Márffy Ödön, Szőnyi István)
In Baja before the establish of the museum became private collections like the 20th century’s fine art. These pieces became later classical art. Nagy István inspired the nester art collectors in 1930. The art sets became significant after regular and methodical collecting. After the artist death his wife gave a collection from 49 paintings to the gallery. This cellection became the second important part of the gallery. The municipal commission of Baja in 1936 with the estublish of the gallery presented regulation about museum. So the museum was founded because of fine artist collection.
The collections of Türr István Museum
In the Türr István Museum the archeological collection of 40 000 pieces include important information about popular migration. This collection keeps the one revealed sarmatic cemetery findings in Europe.
In North-Bácska along hungarians there are more nations: „bunyevác”, „sokac”, german. These nations have diversity in traditional costume. The appliances of the crafts are very important and these are kept in museums. The fishing collection are acknowledge nationwide.
In the collection we can found things with historical meaning. Along the rich guilds’ relics the rifle board collection is determining. This set consist of 50 pieces.
The fine art collection along the Nagy István-paintings and Oltványi-set keeps the significant creation of the contemporary hungarian artists.
In the Éber Memorial House collection beside snr. Éber Sándor’s jnr. Éber Sándor’s and Éber Anna’s paintings, drawings and statues the Éber family’s local historical and literature historical documents, ethnic and archeological collection from Bácska and Sárköz are avaliable too.
The library and data storage give help to the history of North-Bácska.
The Türr István collections are able to visit in five exhibitions (Türr István Museum, Nagy István Gallery, Éber Memorial House, Bunyevác Country House and Bagolyvár/Miskolczy Ferenc Memorial House). Within seven permanent exhibitions (Baja is a town for 300 years, Ethnic groups around Baja, Wildlife by the Danube, Art of Nagy István, Art of snr. Éber Sándor, jnr. Éber Sándor and Éber Anna, Bunyevác people’s architecture and housing culture from the early 20’s, Art of Miskolczy Ferenc) are able to visit. Along the permanent exhibitions there are seven temporary exhibitions in 2014.
